Over the past decade, Egypt has undergone a significant transformation in its electricity sector, emerging as a model for sustainable energy development. Since 2014, the Egyptian government has invested over 189 billion pounds to improve infrastructure and increase generating capacity, resulting in an addition of approximately 30 gigawatts within six years—a feat considered unprecedented. This expansion has enabled Egypt to meet its growing energy demands and ensure a stable electricity supply for its populace.

Key Achievements in Egypt’s Power Sector

  • Infrastructure Modernization: The Ministry of Electricity significantly improved the electrical network, with total investments in strengthening and modernizing the electricity transmission system since 2014 amounting to about 85 billion pounds. This modernization enhanced the network’s response and stability, reducing power outages.

  • Renewable Energy Integration: Egypt has embraced renewable energy technologies, implementing large projects to generate electricity from wind and solar sources. Notable developments include wind farms in Ras Gharib and West Nubariya, and the Benban Solar Energy Complex. The capacity of wind energy reached 1,630 megawatts, while solar energy amounted to about 1,770 megawatts.

  • Combined Cycle Power Plants: In collaboration with Siemens and consortium partners, Egypt completed the world’s largest combined cycle power plants in record time. The Beni Suef, Burullus, and New Capital plants collectively added 14.4 gigawatts to the national grid, supplying electricity to up to 40 million people. Each plant became the largest gas-fired combined cycle plant ever built and operated globally.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has faced persistent challenges in its power sector, characterized by inadequate generation capacity, transmission bottlenecks, and distribution inefficiencies.
