IBEDC Denies Claims of 3,000 Staff Layoffs, Plans Legal Action Over False Reports
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has dismissed reports claiming that it terminated the appointment of 3,000 staff, stating that such claims are entirely false. The company clarified that its total workforce is approximately 2,500 employees, making the alleged mass layoffs impossible.
IBEDC’s Official Statement
In a press release issued on Wednesday, IBEDC’s Coordinating Head of Corporate Services, Angela Olanrewaju, debunked the misinformation and criticized the misleading reports.
“IBEDC strongly refutes the false claim that it has terminated 3,000 employees. The company has repeatedly clarified, with verifiable facts, that its total staff strength is approximately 2,500. The persistence of this misinformation suggests a deliberate and malicious attempt by certain media outlets to tarnish IBEDC’s reputation.”
As part of its response, IBEDC announced its intention to take legal action against those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
Ongoing Mediation with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
The company also addressed concerns regarding the ongoing labor dispute with the Oyo State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over third-party outsourcing issues involving PIPLL. IBEDC expressed appreciation for the Federal Ministry of Labour for mediating discussions and urged the NLC to exercise patience while negotiations continue.
“We appeal to the Oyo State branch of the NLC to refrain from picketing our offices or disrupting operations. Such actions would only impede our ability to provide uninterrupted power supply to businesses and residents in Oyo State and its environs.”
Clarification on Former PIPLL Staff Protest
IBEDC also addressed the protest at its Head Office involving a group of former PIPLL staff. The company clarified that these individuals were never direct employees of IBEDC but rather engaged through PIPLL, a third-party outsourcing firm.
“IBEDC has engaged PIPLL to ensure a swift resolution of the issue. We remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of staff welfare across our entire franchise.”
IBEDC’s Commitment to Service Delivery
Despite these developments, IBEDC reassured its customers in Ibadan, Ogun State, and other coverage areas that it remains committed to uninterrupted power supply and efficient service delivery. The company emphasized that ongoing engagements with relevant stakeholders are aimed at resolving all outstanding issues amicably.
IBEDC encourages the public to disregard false reports and rely on verified information from official channels.
